JEWELLERY CARE
OR HOW YOU CAN KEEP THE BLING GOING FOR DECADES TO COME
THE PROBLEM WITH AGING
Over the years your jewellery can and will lose some of its bling. We finish all our products to slow down this process. However, if you want to maintain the shine and avoid discolouration, you will need to take care of your jewellery.
To avoid this process as much as possible when you are not wearing your jewelry, it is best to store your jewelry inside the LDPE plastic bag (to protect it from oxidation) inside the Fair Trade cotton bag (to protect it from UV light) that we both provide with our products.
WHAT TO KNOW IN ADVANCE
We use a wide range of finishes within our range. Most of the time you will see contrast finishes on our jewellery, but we also offer plain silver jewellery. The easiest way to identify your jewellery is to check our product descriptions.
It is also quite easy to tell if your ring has additional finishes or not. On the first picture you can see an oxidised ring, while on the second you can see a plain silver ring.
As a simple rule of thumb, if your ring has strong contrasts within the colour of the silver (grey/gold/colour), you will have extra finish on your jewellery. Be more careful with the care of this jewellery.
If you look closely, even our plain silver jewellery is finished with different textures and polishing methods. We also advise you to be careful about overly aggressive methods of care.
The problem with most commercial silver jewellery cleaners is that they are designed to polish the silver aggressively. This can result in the removal of carefully designed and crafted effects from the jewellery. As you can imagine, this is to be avoided at all costs. As well as oxidised finishes, other finishes can be affected by the chemicals in these cleaners.
HOW TO CLEAN SKRUD JEWELLERY
Let’s start by repeating: Incorrect and aggressive cleaning can severely damage, and in some cases completely destroy, all additional finishes and structures.
In order to avoid removing desired finishes and structures, we recommend two ways of cleaning your SKRUD jewellery:
- Get (our) SILVER POLISHING CLOTH. Simply rubbing the cloth over the jewellery will clean it and restore its bling.
- If your jewellery is (very) dirty, boil some water and mix it with a (mild) washing-up liquid. Take an old toothbrush and scrub gently to remove the dirt. Avoid using the toothbrush on the finished areas as much as possible. However, you can clean areas with a different texture. Finally, wipe the wet jewellery with a cloth
